The header is not 7 bytes long, it is 4 bytes long. As the ?page=format says, first four bytes is the constant 32-bit word representing the header, the 5th byte (or offset 4) is the font version, 6th byte (offset 5) is lineHeight and 7th byte (offset 6) is the sizeOver variable.
I downloaded the ?font=contra and ?font=4x5_64x30 fonts and looked at it in hexadecimal mode but couldn't find any occurences of 0xD7 or 0xA9.
As of the sizeOver variable (the byte at offset 6) in that font, its value is 0xF8 which (if interpreted as signed 8-bit integer) equals -7.
If I'm still missing something, please, explain further - I'd be glad to fix whatever seems to be wrong.

I was dissecting several .bmf's on the site, while looking at the format page, and noticed 2 odd discrepancies.
Why do many files (notably the CONTRA font file) start with a 7-byte header, different than the format page's header and other files (notably, the 4x5_64x30 font file)
And there's a couple of bytes (d7 a9 in the CONTRA file) which I assume are meant to be -7, representing size over and size inner - How does d7 a9 translate to -7?

@Blawnode: Sorry to hear that. The website faces an incursion of spammers so (in addition to reCAPTCHA) I had to filter messages with some most frequent spam words (the usual crap that's pushed).

A added some more fonts and links from yet another page I found on internet having one of those rare lists of nice colorful pixelated charset images.
3267 fonts at this very moment, at least 30 per letter, 7300 tags and 700 artist credited. And the website just passed 990K views. I added the views counter at the bottom of the main page.

3200 fonts (ca 2100 proportional, 1100 monospace)
970K total views
7000 total tags, 3000 external links

I do a lot of main page refreshing as well....
