Welcome

This site gathers bitmap/bytemap fonts, saved and extracted mostly from games and demoscene, drawn and pixelated by various graphicians and artists, lost and forgotten in time.

You can find hundreds of those fonts here, either as pictures or, better yet, in a file format that allows basic (macro)typography.

Feel free to browse the list, filtered either by initial letter of the font name (above right) or more specifically (via form above, left).

In closer look

expand

A font is a set of characters. Bitmap is a map of bits (picture). A bitmap font is a set of pictures as its proprietary characters.

We can further distinguish pixelated/image fonts with just two colours (black or white, foreground or background) and fonts drawn with more than one colour. Let's call these bytemap fonts.

The fonts published here are of several origins:

  • pictures gathered by Daniel Guldkrans
  • font art from the archive of Carsten Cumbrowski
  • bytemap fonts of the 8-bit scene – mostly Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum
  • bytemap fonts of the 16-bit scene – mostly Atari ST and Amiga
  • other fonts from various sources (old demos, intros, etc.) converted by me

Wherever I could get a grip of the name of the author, I mentioned them in the file description. A lot of these fonts are many years old, some even decades. Font that were part of some games are now so called abandonware. I'm going to assume in good faith that all bitmap fonts shown here are freeware.

If you happen to be an author of a certain font presented here that you do not wish to be available, then feel free to contact me and I will make quick amendments to remove it from this website.

Similarly, if you happen to find an error in the description of any font, please, tell me what to fix in the discussion below each font.

Thanks in advance!

What's in it for me?

Let this site be helpful to you if:

  • you are a graphic designer seeking for some cool bitmap fonts
  • you are a programmer and would like to implement the BMF file-format
  • you'd like to have a pic of your text drawn by one of the fonts

Enjoy!

2020-10-27 03:46:27 admin@Zbeng: Thanks a bunch for the info. I renamed the font - let's assume "Fun Vision Fucktro" for name and "Alex" (whoever they may be) for the artist, until proven otherwise.
2020-10-27 03:00:00 adminThanks for the links! I edited the palette to add the cyan version.
2020-10-27 01:57:33 adminIt looks like this font is a downsized version of ?font=ollie. Also, the number of colors used (63 here versus 5 in "ollie") suggest the downsizing created new shades between original existing colors.
2020-10-27 00:19:49 ZbengIndeed "The Dream Team" used this (I think, exact font) extensively in MS-DOS cracktros in grey and cyan palettes, and sometimes in their logo in an orange palette. Here are a few representative examples:

2020-10-26 23:55:01 ZbengThese intros/cracktros have the same font in a different palette:

I will send the font in this palette version.

Picture of the statue of liberty by Smiley, but again Mic was credited for the font when it was used in Amiga (The Lightwave Demo).
2020-10-26 23:49:50 ZbengNow, on all these cracktros it says the graphics are by Smiley. Not 100% sure that the font too is by Smiley, since on other places Mic is credited for it.
I'll probably need to look in every one of these scrolltexts to look for Mic. I suspect Mic was not a member of Equinox anymore when some of these cracktros were released.

2020-10-26 23:28:53 ZbengAfter more investigation, probably the font did not have to be ripped... Mic from Agony (Amiga team) was a member of Equinox (Atari ST). He probably helped Angels (Amiga) by providing an Amiga font version to The Lightwave Demo (1990). But "The Compil III intro by Equinox" was released already in 1989 with this font.

2020-10-26 23:15:56 ZbengRipped from Amiga (most likely) and used on the Atari ST in The Compil III intro by Equinox:

2020-10-26 17:58:07 ZbengSorry, I missed your exact same comment below... oops
I will try to rip the original from there..
2020-10-26 17:54:42 ZbengI re-ripped the "Fun Vision Fucktro" just to find the credits, but they were not there. :-(
This is the only relevant info I could find in the scroll text (which I added in demozoo):
"HELLO TO ALEX THANX A LOT FOR THE FONT AND ALL THE GRAFIX"
and
"FONT RIPPED BY THE TWILIGHT ZONE ON AMIGA m HELLO BEAT MANIAC"
I will send again the font as I ripped it. It has 13 colors originally.
