Welcome

This site gathers bitmap/bytemap fonts, saved and extracted mostly from games and demoscene, drawn and pixelated by various graphicians and artists, lost and forgotten in time.

You can find hundreds upon hundreds of those fonts here, either as pictures or, better yet, in a file format that allows basic (macro)typography. Feel free to browse the list, filtered either by initial letter of the font name (above right) or more specifically (via form above, left).

In closer look

expand

A font is a set of characters. Bitmap is a map of bits (picture). A bitmap font is a set of pictures as its proprietary characters.

We can further distinguish pixelated/image fonts with just two colours (black or white, foreground or background) and fonts drawn with more than one colour. Let's call these bytemap fonts.

The fonts published here are of several origins:

  • pictures gathered by Daniel Guldkrans
  • font art from the archive of Carsten Cumbrowski
  • bytemap fonts of the 8-bit scene – mostly Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum
  • bytemap fonts of the 16-bit scene – mostly Atari ST and Amiga
  • other fonts from various sources (old demos, intros, etc.) converted by me

Wherever I could get a grip of the name of the author, I mentioned them in the file description. A lot of these fonts are many years old, some even decades. Font that were part of some games are now so called abandonware. I'm going to assume in good faith that all bitmap fonts shown here are freeware.

If you happen to be an author of a certain font presented here that you do not wish to be available, then feel free to contact me and I will make quick amendments to remove it from this website.

Similarly, if you happen to find an error in the description of any font, please, tell me what to fix in the discussion below each font.

Thanks in advance!

What's in it for me?

Let this site be helpful to you if:

  • you are a graphic designer seeking for some cool bitmap fonts
  • you are a programmer and would like to implement the BMF file-format
  • you'd like to have a pic of your text drawn by one of the fonts

Enjoy!

2023-02-19 22:42:34 adminLetters other than those in DATA EAST "recycled" by crs/broncs.
2023-01-31 03:27:32 adminSimilar font used in Odysseas by Peni5oft - https://demozoo.org/productions/313824/.
2023-01-15 06:09:39General discussionJoe StroutYep, it'll be a big listbox with Char1, Char2, and the Kern value. With some buttons to add/remove rows. Only need to find the time...
2023-01-14 21:00:33General discussionadminNice job! Looks promising.
The kerning feature wouldn't be that hard to add, would it? - input box for two characters, perhaps a convenient keyboard shortcut for expanding and contracting the shift, maybe some visualisation of the distance...
Once it's done I'd be happy to add the link among the tools into the ?page=support section.
2023-01-14 18:09:45General discussionJoe StroutHere's a screen shot of my conversion tool so far. Still need to add kern support (it currently can calculating kerning, but gives you no way to edit it).

2023-01-14 15:21:40General discussionJoe Strout@admin: sorry for the late reply... conversion from TTF is still important to me. BMF is the only font support in Mini Micro, and people sometimes want to just draw nice readable text, using Noto Sans or whatever.

I'll see about cleaning up my converter tool and releasing it somewhere, and I guess I'll go ahead and include conversion to/from this AngelCode BMFont format too. I'll be sure to let you know when it's posted (but it may be a while -- got too many irons in the fire right now!).
2023-01-12 01:25:03 adminI took a liberty to replace the "-" character here, which, as the only one, was using a variety of other colors, not present anywhere else.
2022-12-04 01:21:49General discussionadminThe first line on their site says "This program will allow you to generate bitmap fonts from TrueType fonts." So there - really not much of a common denominator.
Though there are some ?tag=ttf fonts in collection here from the past, I think I am actually against adding other vector fonts here now. Those two worlds (of pixelated and vector graphics) have little in common, imo.
There is a library and an editor I wrote in Lazarus, as
of tools there's https://github.com/crs2/Bmf/blob/develop/ttf2png.php and https://bmf.php5.cz/img2bmf.php
2022-12-03 18:35:20General discussionJoe StroutI've recently become aware of the "BMFont" format, popularized by AngelCode.com (http://www.angelcode.com/products/bmfont/). It seems to be essentially the same as BMF, except that it uses two files: a PNG file for the glyph data, and a separate text file with the metadata. That's two files to keep track of instead of one, but it has the advantage that you can easily look at the PNG file for a preview of the font.

Any thoughts about how these two formats relate? Are there conversion tools from one to the other? Finally, one reason I've heard that people like BMFont is that there is a nice (Windows) tool for creating them from TrueType fonts -- do we have such a tool for BMF? (Except for mine, which I have not released?)
2022-11-29 15:30:30 OliverThanks for fixing.
