Welcome

This site gathers bitmap/bytemap fonts, saved and extracted mostly from games and demoscene, drawn and pixelated by various graphicians and artists, lost and forgotten in time.

You can find hundreds of those fonts here, either as pictures or, better yet, in a file format that allows basic (macro)typography.

Feel free to browse the list, filtered either by initial letter of the font name (above right) or more specifically (via form above, left).

In closer look

expand

A font is a set of characters. Bitmap is a map of bits (picture). A bitmap font is a set of pictures as its proprietary characters.

We can further distinguish pixelated/image fonts with just two colours (black or white, foreground or background) and fonts drawn with more than one colour. Let's call these bytemap fonts.

The fonts published here are of several origins:

  • pictures gathered by Daniel Guldkrans
  • font art from the archive of Carsten Cumbrowski
  • bytemap fonts of the 8-bit scene – mostly Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum
  • bytemap fonts of the 16-bit scene – mostly Atari ST and Amiga
  • other fonts from various sources (old demos, intros, etc.) converted by me

Wherever I could get a grip of the name of the author, I mentioned them in the file description. A lot of these fonts are many years old, some even decades. Font that were part of some games are now so called abandonware. I'm going to assume in good faith that all bitmap fonts shown here are freeware.

If you happen to be an author of a certain font presented here that you do not wish to be available, then feel free to contact me and I will make quick amendments to remove it from this website.

Similarly, if you happen to find an error in the description of any font, please, tell me what to fix in the discussion below each font.

Thanks in advance!

What's in it for me?

Let this site be helpful to you if:

  • you are a graphic designer seeking for some cool bitmap fonts
  • you are a programmer and would like to implement the BMF file-format
  • you'd like to have a pic of your text drawn by one of the fonts

Enjoy!

2021-02-03 16:43:58 admin@Zbeng: Oh, pardon me. Link added. Wow, that demo has so many bytemap fonts!
2021-02-03 16:26:34 adminI added this font among the first bunch, and at that time I included only basic English letters. But recently (but still before the talks about the new format) I deviced meself a newer tool that includes some diacrititical/int'l characters (in this case with codes 0x80 .. 0xAF in this char table above). I'll run the font through it once again and add more international chars to it.

P.S. Added as ?font=ari14a
2021-02-03 14:23:19 Joe StroutI'm glad you included it, and it's exactly what I needed! With the adjustments it now looks very close to the original. Thank you!

Once we have the v1.2 format worked out, I will probably convert and submit some additional fonts like this. They're super useful in contexts like Mini Micro which do not support scalable fonts.
2021-02-03 06:53:56 ZbengAs mentioned below, the origin is probably the "Delirious Demo 1" menu - https://media.demozoo.org/screens/o/bc/29/912c.183819.png
It is about time I ripped all fonts from this demo again using my current ripping standards :)
2021-02-03 02:19:37 adminSimilar (but not quite!) font spotted in The Compil #15 by Phenix and The Black Cats - https://demozoo.org/productions/76084/

P.S. and from The Compil #13 by Phenix and The Black Cats - https://demozoo.org/productions/76082/
2021-02-03 02:10:52 admin@Zbeng: Gosh, I found a possible duplicate with ?font=defont . Also ?font=272 has a same shape *and* Daniel Guldkrans describes it as "COMPACTDISK MENU 31 BY THE POMPEY PIRATES". You were right.
2021-02-03 00:38:59 adminBtw. this font is converted from the original TTF file. I'm not quite sure of including these here at all, to be honest - don't see much of a reason of keeping them in this form (inferior in comparison). The main point of the BMF format is in typography of pixelated chars.
2021-02-03 00:28:17 admin@Joe: It's the ordinary Arial. I adjusted chars you mentioned a pixel here and there. Hopefully, it's closer to how it usually renders (it's hard to get it all right).
2021-02-02 23:02:14 Joe StroutThis font is pretty great, but it needs a little tweaking.

I feel like the space is a bit wider than it should be. Also the punctuation (comma, period, exclamation point) are all a little too close to the previous letter.
2021-02-02 22:30:42 ZbengI saved it from memory. Maybe the screenshot does not show it. I can run the intro again to check..
